Founded in 1987 by Martin Locke, Solar Tackle is one of the oldest existing brands in modern carp fishing.
Born out of a need to get to the water during the week, Martin worked as a metal engineer in the early 1980s, making stainless tackle for his own fishing during his lunch break. He soon had more requests from fellow anglers to make them something similar than he could make in his lunch breaks.
So in his spare time, he worked tirelessly to fulfill all the orders from other anglers before returning to his regular job.
From small acorns grow giant oaks, as Martin says, and so it was with Solar Tackle. In its 30-year history, Solar has been responsible for the development and manufacture of many iconic and market-leading products. The Globetrotter, Sod and Worldwide pods, their famous buzzer bars and banksticks, the original Monkey Climbers and the Bow Loc landing net through to the current P1 Stainless, Titanium and Advanced Rig Gear ranges.
Martin didn't stop at tackle, but also brought Solar to carp lures in the 1980s.
Fishing some of the country's famous carp waters, including Savay Lake and Redmire Pool, Martin and some of the country's best carp anglers at the time began to develop Solar Baits. One of the first were the original red and yellow Savay birdies, making Solar one of the first companies to produce birdfood boilies for carp anglers. The Savay Seed Mix was so successful that it still forms the basis of our Birdy baits today.
The development of baits quickly became an integral part of Solar Tackle. This led to Solar's most famous bait, the Club Mix. This bait helped Martin land a world record carp of 92 pounds in January 2010!
The Solar story continues, and for its 30th anniversary in 2017, Solar Tackle once again broke new ground with a range of high quality bedchairs, chairs, bags and bivvies under the Solar SP banner.
