But for the hardy among us, winter carp fishing offers a unique challenge and the chance to catch some impressive fish. Remember that carp fishing in winter can be challenging, but with the right knowledge and skills you can be successful even in the cold season. There are few better sights for a carp angler than a frost-covered bank, mist rising from the water's surface and a big, fat mirror carp in the net. :)

Where do carp fish in winter?

Choosing the right water or spod is even more important in winter. Carp retreat to deeper water areas during the winter months. The key areas of a lake, such as depressions and structures, offer them protection and food. It is important to find these resting areas.

Smaller waters with a good fish population are often a good choice, as the fish can be found more quickly. You can use an echo sounder or a sounding rod to find deep holes and other interesting spots.
A thermometer can help you find warmer areas that may be attractive to carp in winter. The best way to do this is with a special thermometer that can measure the temperature at different depths, giving you an accurate overview of the different layers of water.

Ground mixes in combination with sweet boilies are popular winter baits. Alcohol-based attractants can also have a great attracting effect. And don't forget to use visual eye-catchers such as white boilies or yellow canned corn!
